Quintas de Melgaço – Agricultura e Turismo, S.A. (equivalent to Quintas de Melgaço – Agriculture and Tourism, Limited Company) was founded on November, 6th, 1990.
Its purpose is to produce, bottle, commercialize and export wines and agricultural products, together with activities related to tourism. It started on December 28th of that same year.
The idea to found Quintas de Melgaço Company was due to an inhabitant of Melgaço who migrated to Brasil, Amadeu Abílio Lopes. He was rich enough to rally hundred of local producers to his project, thus turning them into share-holders.
Quintas de Melgaço was then founded: an industry built in a modern and pleasant architecture, equipped with new technologies.
The elevated number of share-holders gave the company some renown and a representative status of the municipality that Amadeu Abílio Lopes, main share-holder, wanted to preserve in the future. Therefore, in 1996, inorder to endow the company with an institutional status and because of the age of its existence, Amadeu Abílio Lopes gave its position to the Municipality of Melgaço.
