Gancha de São Brás

Vila Real
Description / Facilities
Some say that Gancha would be a kind of "tool" to remove foreign objects lodged in the throat at the same time it would have a dampening effect on the irritation and inflammation of the same; another version is that it symbolizes the bispal staff of S. Brás, considered the patron saint of throat diseases.
Tradition dictates that on the days of São Brás Feast, the boys offer the 'Gancha' to girls who give it back on the day of Santa Luzia, with another local specialty, the "Pito", a pastel stuffed with sweet pumpkin.
