Viewpoint - Monte de Santo António

Maia
Description
The view point of the Mount of Stº António is where pagan rituals used to be carried out and is full of legends that are passed on from generation to generation by the local people.
This hill, where today Christian worship is practised, has undoubtedly retained pre-Christian religious rituals. During religious festivals farmers, marketers and cattle raisers used to take their cattle to the Stº António Hill, where they made the animals walk anti-clockwise round the chapel in a way that resembled the worshipping of Goddess Diana, protector of flocks and young animals.
