Santo António do Telheiro Chapel

Matosinhos
Description
This chapel was built in 1786 with the donations of an almsgiving box that had been placed along the Royal Road that connected Porto to Braga.
A popular legend traces its origin to the pilgrimage of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, who, on the way to Santiago de Compostela found shelter under a shed on this site.
In 1956 the chapel was enlarged, namely by adding a bell tower and an exterior tile cladding.
The festivities of Saint António do Tellheiro are one of the most important taking place in S. Mamede Infesta. It lasts an entire week and occurs at the beginning of September.
