The railway line, coming from the south, after the General Torres stop, passed a tunnel over Avenida da República and followed by a deep trench, inlaid between the lands of the Serra do Pilar military barracks and the ancient CUF factory, until the Maria Pia bridge. It was that trench that covered with earth, allowing to create, at the surface, a space of much bigger dimensions (8000 square metres), where, now it is installed the Maria Pia Park.
