Small Nature Reserve for the protection of birds. Through a project submitted by the Biological Park of Gaia, the administration of Douro and Leixões Port and the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia signed a protocol, in December 2007.
The protection of birds and the landscape is the principal objective of this refuge. Along the annual cycle in the estuary of the river Douro you will find, Kingfisher, flocks of Cormorant, Grey Herons, White Herons, Squacco Herons, Common Sandpipers, Ruddy Tirnstones, Knots, Bluethroats and a variety of Gulls, among many other birds.
San Paio Bay is a place of election for bird-watchers and nature photographers.
