Forte de Santiago da Barra

Viana do Castelo
Description

It is thought to date from the reign of Afonso III, the first fortification placed on the estuary of the river Lima, although the earliest safe date is already in the 15th century, when there was built a fortress, that would have been completed during the reign of d. Manuel I, as suggest some architectural elements, including the so-called Manueline Tower of Roqueta " located in the southwest of modern bastion fortress. At the end of the 16th century, the fortress was the subject of successive works of improvement, having been under Spanish domination, during the reign of Philip II (Philip I of Portugal), which was built the current fortress of polygonal plant, from a design by Filippo Terzi, the most famous designer of military buildings of that era.
