Fojo do Lobo (Wolf Grotto)

Vila Verde
Description
The ‘Fojo do Lobo of Gondomar’ (Wolf Grotto of Gondomar), is considered one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, has two ditches and a wall with a length of about 2 km. The constant attacks of wolves to livestock and the insecurity amongst the population motivated the construction of this ‘Fojo do Lobo’ (Wolf Grotto).

With walls in a “V” form, the wolves were attracted to the inside and chased by the beats as a trap consisting of disguised ditches covered with dyer’s weed, preventing them from escaping, by getting them trapped. With the protection of the Iberian Wolf and the outlawing of the beats, the Grottos of the Wolf were unusable, becoming, however, an important cultural landmark of mountain communities.
