The Wine and Vineyard Interpretation Center – Santo André de Ancede Monastery
The Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede (Santo André de Ancede Monastery) was founded in the early twelfth century and its history is closely related with the wine production and marketing. Since the medieval period that the wine produced in the Monastery`s enclosure was guided to Oporto, integrating the commercial circuits of river Douro.
The Monastery was expandied and dignified through the acquisition of works of art and successive architectural restorations with the profits from the wine export trade. In the XVIII century the great building of barns and cellar was built, which, together with the press form the Wine and Vineyard Interpretation Center.
In this Interpretation Center we can visit an exhibition about the wine and vineyard cycle, the history of the Monastery, the functionality of these spaces and the farm and the Mysteries of Christ`s Life exhibited in twenty natural mosaics.
Every year the Educational Services of the Municipal Museum promote several tours and activities.
