Description

Classified as property of public interest since 1977, the House of the Lagariça Tower was visited by Eça de Queirós, and served as inspiration for the writing of his novel “The Illustrious House of Ramires”.

The lone military square tower was built in the 12th century and served as a jail and watch-tower. Only later were built the houses around the tower, then becoming the ensemble the dwelling house of the Lords of the Tower of Lagariça.

In addition to the “illustrious house”, the farm features beautiful cultivated fields and fruit trees; the “Eira Velha”, the farm's highest spot, where it is said that Eça de Queirós used to seat to admire the scenery and write the novel; the niches of the Way of the Cross; the “Tanque das Murtas” (Myrtles Tank”; the gardens of romantic inspiration; the wood with stone benches, and a replica of the tower that served as a dovecote.

This magnificent manor house, owned by the Cochofel family, can be visited outside with the consent of the owners.
