Boticas
Description

The Outeiro Lesenho, located close to the villages of Campos and Covas  do Barroso, in the parish of São Salvador de Viveiro, Boticas, Vila Rea district, is one of the most significant fortified settlements/castros  in the Peninsular Northwest and the European proto-history. The overview that the high altitude of this conical mass of granite that covers over the lands of Barroso has been decisive strategic factor for the development of this "central place" in the network of fortified settlements, which since the late Bronze Age and during the Iron Age occupied the region. Since the early archaeological work of Prof. Santos Júnior in 1960, this fort shows a strong defensive system of several walls, in radial and concentric arrangement, where some entries were identified. The main doors would be protected by warrior heads statues, of which four magnificent examples are known, that value their importance. The buildings intended for public baths stand out for their splendour and construction technique being unique monuments of the Castros architectonic set, with several examples that can be found all over the northwest of the Iberian peninsula, from the north of Galicia and Asturias to the left bank of the Douro River. Pre-roman architectonic creations, possibly deriving from "sweating lodges" of perishable materials, upgrading to monuments during the proto-urban phase of the Castro Culture (century I b.C. - I a.D.).
